The Captioning Process

A BCCS representative will assist you in deciding which type of captioning would be best suited for your production

The following factors are considered:

  • Benefits of each different type of captioning
  • Type of production
  • Length of production
  • Turnaround time

If the program will be captioned Real-time (live) the dates(s) and time(s) are booked with BCCS. BCCS arranges for a captionist to be available. At the scheduled time, the captionist will connect to the appropriate broadcaster using a modem and phone lines and caption the program.

If the program will be captioned Live-display, BCCS will require the master tape and a VHS copy of the program. A captionist will use the VHS copy to write a caption file. The caption file is then fed through a computer to an encoder, which inserts the captions onto line 21. The program and captions are recorded onto a blank tape. This process creates a captioned sub-master.

If the production will be captioned Off-line, BCCS will require the master tape and a SVHS copy of the production. The SVHS must have time code burned into the top left corner of the screen. A captionist will use the SVHS copy to write, time, edit and place the captions. The captions are then encoded.

Broadcast Captioning & Consulting Services Inc. has FTP capabilities to receive your programming. With this feature, you save time on sending the tape to be captioned and also you save money on shipping charges. This feature is design for the customer to make it faster, reliable and efficient.
